Wayanad literally means land of paddy fields in Malayalam. Wayanad is the only district of Kerala lying in Deccan plateau. Apart from paddy fields Wayanad has vast tea estates and cardamom plantations. It is known as the land of spicy hills. Tourist attractions are Edakkal caves , Kuruva islands , Thirunelly temple, Lakkidi view point, Muthanga wildlife sanctuary, Tholpetty wildlife sanctuary, Chembra peak, Pookot Lake , Banasurasagar dam, Soochipara waterfalls and all the tea estates on the road sides. Kalpetta is the district capital.
Wayanad is worth visiting after the rains during November to April.
Good hotels suiting any budgets are available at major towns namely Kalpetta, Mananthavadi and Sulthan Bathery. Many resorts are available throughout the district.
KarnatakaSRTC and KeralaSRTC runs direct buses from Bangalore to Kalpetta the district capital of Wayanad. After reaching Kalpetta one can easily get around other towns in KeralaSRTC and private buses. Most of the attractions are away from the main roads.
