Udupi town is the district capital of Udupi district of Karnataka. Udupi is famous for its Sri Krishna temple, Malpe beach and St marys Island. Sri Krishna temple at Udupi dedicated to Hindu deity Lord Krishna and was founded by Sri Madhavacharya a Vaishnavite. The temple administration is done by Asthamatha(eight monastries) by a rotation policy called as Paryaya. The Ashtamatha was established by Sri Madhavacharya. The legend associated with Sri Krishna temple is that Lord Krishna made his statue turn towards a devotee called Kanakadasa who was barred from entering the temple. Legend tells that Kanakadasa viewed the statue through a small window. Piligrims that reach Sri Krishna temple at Udupi worship Lord Krsihna through that same window. Malpe beach is on Arabian sea coast and is 6km from Udupi town. Near to this beautiful beach are three rocky islands one holding a light house. St Mary's Island is a group of islands formed in Arabian sea off the cost of Malpe. The major attraction of these islands are the coloumn like formations of basalt rocks and beautiful beaches. The Geological survey of India classifies these islands as a National Geological Monument. Apart from these Udupi is also famous for its vegetarian cuisine which has origins from the rituals at Sri Krishna temple.

KSRTC runs direct services Bangalore to Udupi. To roam around in the Udupi town KSRTC and private buses are available. To reach St Mary's Island private boats are available from Malpe harbour.
