Sholayar is situated in Thrissur district of Kerala. There is dam at Sholayar built over the a tributary of Chalakkudy Puzha. The area Sourrounding the dam is a forest belonging to the Vazhachal Forest Range. The forest is home animals including Lion Tailed Macaque, Elephants etc. Different varieties of the Horn Bill, the State bird of Kerala can be found here. Different varieties include the Malabar Grey Horn Bill and the Great Horn Bill. The Peringalkuthu Dam is another reservoir near to Sholayar. The whole area is covered with hills and forests on all sides, with sparse human habitation. Valparai , a famous Hill Station and Athirappilly a famous waterfall are near by Sholayar. The Dam gets misty after rains.
Best time to visit Sholayar Dam is after the monsoons. Typical season is from September to February.
To reach by Route 1 , SETC, KarnatakaSRTC and Indian Railways runs direct services from Bangalore to Coimbatore. From Coimbatore one can get TNSTC buses to Pollachi. Pollachi can also be reached by direct SETC services from Bangalore. From Pollachi TNSTC buses are available to Valparai. From Valparai TNSTC and KeralaSRTC buses are available to Chalakkudy which passes through Sholayar. Route 2 is about 70km more than Route 1. To reach by Route 2, KeralaSRTC , KarnatakaSRTC and Indian Railways direct Services are available to Chalakkudy. From Chalakkudy TNSTC and KeralaSRTC buses are available to Valparai that pass through Sholayar. TO obtain permission one needs to stop at Peringalkuthu(10km away) which on the road from Sholayar to Chalakkudy. Vehicles are not allowed to enter the road from Athirapilly to Valparai from 5:30PM ato 6:00AM.
