Palakkad is the district capital of Palakkad district of Kerala. Palakkad is geographically important for the gap in the Western Ghats at the place. To the north of the gap lies the Nilgiri hills and south of the gap is the Anaimalai hills. The main attraction at Palakkad town is the Palakkad fort built by the Mysore ruler Hyder Ali. Malampuzha dam and Fantasy park is famous tourist destination only 10km away from Palakkad town. The dam is built over Bharathapuzha and has a beautiful garden at the dam site. Kalpathy is an early Tamil Bhrahmin settlement inside the Palakkad town. Kalpathy still has Agraharas - clusters of houses dating back to 15th century. Jainamedu a Jain temple lying on the outskirts of the Palakkad town and Killikurishimangalam hosting the home of Kuchan Nambiar, a renowned Malayalam artist are the other attractions near to Palakkad town.
